Financial Controller - Real Estate

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2026-06-07

We are a well-established, family-owned real estate ownership and development firm with a long-standing presence in the Montreal market. Operating with a lean, collaborative team, the company oversees a diversified portfolio of commercial and residential assets and has built a reputation around long-term relationships, operational stability, and thoughtful growth. Unlike highly corporate environments, this is a close-knit organization where employees tend to stay for many years and play an active role in the day-to-day success of the business. The culture is hands-on, entrepreneurial, and built on trust, accountability, and flexibility. Leadership values individuals who are dependable, grounded, and looking for a long-term home where they can genuinely make an impact. We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee the financial operations of a growing real estate portfolio and act as the key financial leader within the organization. This is a high-visibility role that combines strategic financial oversight with hands-on operational involvement. The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable wearing multiple hats in a smaller company environment — capable of managing high-level financial reporting and controls while also remaining connected to the day-to-day financial operations of the business. This role will work closely with ownership, external accounting partners, and internal administrative staff to ensure the organization continues operating efficiently and effectively. The company is highly flexible on schedule and structure, offering a very accommodating hybrid setup and openness to remote arrangements for the right individual. While a CPA designation is welcomed, it is not required. What matters most is strong real estate financial experience, stability in prior roles, and the ability to thrive in a long-term leadership position within a family-run organization.

Responsibilities

Oversee all financial operations across the company’s real estate portfolio Manage financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Coordinate closely with external accountants and tax professionals Monitor and improve internal controls, financial processes, and reporting accuracy Oversee bookkeeping functions and ensure day-to-day accounting operations run smoothly Analyze property-level financial performance and provide operational insights to ownership Support strategic planning, acquisitions, refinancing activities, and portfolio growth initiatives Assist with banking relationships, lender reporting, and financing documentation Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and audit preparation Participate in operational and administrative oversight within the office as needed Work collaboratively with ownership in a highly visible and trusted leadership capacity

Qualifications

Significant experience in accounting and finance leadership roles within real estate, property management, or real estate development environments Strong understanding of real estate financial operations, reporting, and asset management Experience overseeing full-cycle accounting and coordinating with external accounting firms Background working in smaller or entrepreneurial organizations preferred Yardi experience is considered a strong asset, though not mandatory CPA designation is not required Demonstrated career stability and strong tenure in previous roles is highly important Hands-on mentality with the ability to operate both strategically and operationally Strong communication skills and ability to work closely with ownership and senior stakeholders Self-directed, dependable, and comfortable in a flexible, less corporate environment

Compensation

Base salary targeting approximately CAD $160,000–$180,000, with flexibility for the right individual and level of experience Open to highly experienced candidates with compensation expectations above the target range Flexible hybrid schedule with strong work-life balance considerations Open to remote arrangements depending on candidate fit and experience Long-term opportunity with a stable, family-owned real estate organization While traditional benefits are not currently offered, the company prioritizes flexibility, autonomy, and long-term stability for its team members Apply To This Job
