The North Carolina Department of Revenue is committed to excellence in tax administration, and they are seeking a Tax Auditor I to ensure taxpayer compliance with North Carolina tax laws. This role involves examining individual income tax returns and records, maintaining audit plans, and communicating complex information to taxpayers.

Responsibilities

  • Examine individual income tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the Revenue laws of North Carolina
  • Review and audit individual income tax returns to ensure they are in compliance with the statutes and to make appropriate adjustments based on the accounting records available
  • Maintain an audit plan, which includes simultaneously selecting audit candidates, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing provided records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review
  • Utilize excellent time management skills and effectively communicate complex and technical information to taxpayers

Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least twelve semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution
  • A transcript (either official or unofficial) must accompany the application to verify completion of the required twelve accounting hours
  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax
  • Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
